Abstract:
In this subject students learn ways to release the voice. The deep inter-dependence between the voice, the body and thought is revealed and strengthened. Students develop an awareness and application of language and the voice as physical and intellectual tools for communication, using dramatic texts and presentations such as speeches, seminars, panel presentations, tutorials, lectures, press conferences, radio interviews and auditions.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate heightened physical and vocal awareness
- be able to demonstrate a capacity for creative and lateral
thinking
- be able to demonstrate improved depths and range of emotional
power
- be able to demonstrate the capacity to release the natural voice
and develop vocal quality
- be able to demonstrate the capacity to connect breath, thought
and impulse
- be able to demonstrate a capacity to understand and apply muscle
use and correct posture
- be able to demonstrate a capacity for communicating clearly in a
variety of presentational and dramatic contexts
- be able to demonstrate improved confidence with text and
presentations
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- dramatic text - speeches, seminars, panel presentations, tutorials, lectures, press conferences, radio interviews and auditions - physical and vocal awareness - communicating with clarity and confidence - releasing the natural voice and developing vocal quality and power - the connection between breath, thought and impulse - the importance of physical and vocal warm-up exercises - centreing, balance, and spatial awareness - muscle use and posture - eliminating performance-inhibiting habits - physical creativity and lateral thinking
