Abstract:

Theatre History is a major contextual subject for students undertaking courses in theatre/drama. Knowledge of how theatre has developed over the ages will provide students with an understanding of historical periods in western theatre, the major playwrights, and developments over time in production techniques and acting styles.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

-be able to demonstrate an understanding the concept of theatrical periods
-be able to demonstrate and awareness of major elements of the
main periods in western theatre
-be able to place a script in its correct period
-be able to demonstrate an understanding of performance styles and
production elements used in plays from different periods
-be able to demonstrate a good knowledge of the main playwrights
in western theatre

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- Classical Greek and Roman, including Sophocles and Plautus - Medieval - Elizabethan, with special attention to Shakespeare - Comedia del'arte - Restoration theatre - Seventeenth century French theatre, including Moliere - Comedy of manners - from the Restoration to Oscar Wilde - Melodrama - Realism, especially Ibsen and Chekhov - Expressionism - Twentieth century theatre in the USA - Brecht and modern theatre - Theatre of the absurd, especially Beckett - Twentieth century Irish theatre - Musical theatre, especially the Broadway musical - Contemporary theatre - USA and UK
