Abstract:
Selected plays from contemporary Australian theatre are studied with particular focus on cultural contexts. Special attention is paid to periods of intensive activity in playwriting.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to explain and evaluate a wide variety of Australian theatre forms.
- be able to critically appreciate plays as literature and theatre.
- be able to evaluate contemporary history of the Australian theatre and its place in contemporary theatre, television and film within the Australian context.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Critically study selected Australian plays such as the works of Lawler, White, Buzo, Williamson, Hibberd, Romeril, Hewett, Sewell, Nowra, Gow, Rayson, Enright. - Theatre history: the Elizabethan Theatre Trust, the "new waves", the Australian Performing Group, the rise of state theatre companies, community theatre and contemporary performance. - Australian cultural alternative viewpoints including, the aged, the Aboriginal and migrant experience, class and gender. - issues of characterisation, sub-textual studies and physical theatre performance.
