Abstract:

This subject provides an introduction to the key role of information in the management process. It comprises three modules which focus on business information needs, the tools of information management, and the practical development of a simple information system in the form of a case study.

This subject integrates theoretical and applied aspects of information management and sets out to provide a useful 'hands-on' introduction to computer applications and library systems for the commencing student.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

Be able to assess the kinds of information required by a business to make management decisions and meet social and legal responsibilities
Be able to make use of library based information-finding tools at an elementary level
Be able to evaluate an existing business management information system and recommend any desirable changes
Be able to reference academic work correctly
Be able to organise and maintain a computerised filing system
Be able to use the basic computer applications at a functional level
Be able to determine the relevant industry/market factors that need to be considered in designing a management information system
Be able to design and develop a management information system for an entity capable of delivering the information needed by management in an efficient manner.

The subject will cover the following topics:

Module 1 Use of library and information skills Building blocks of data, information and knowledge types and sources of information (physical, financial, social, market) Technology overview Management information functions: Monitoring, controlling, planning Operational, tactical, strategic Organisational structure and the management information system security and data management Academic referencing Module 2 Computer file management Spreadsheet, database Information management in a word processor Enterprise applications as decision support systems Module 3 Case study - recording and reporting: Business case study, or free choice case study
