Abstract:

This is a comprehensive subject aimed at introducing the principles and practice of business management with particular emphasis on financial management of small agribusinesses. Major topics of study include: management concepts; understanding financial statements, evaluating past performance planning ahead; financing the business; the taxation system in Australia; investment appraisal and business structure. The subject material is applied to businesses involved in the equine sector, agriculture, viticulture and issues in farm forestry.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the concept of management and management activities;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the particular problems of small business management;
- be able to analyse and interpret financial statements in an agribusiness context;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of and apply business planning procedures and investment analysis of perennial plantations;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of business finance, sources of finance and financial planning;
- be able to show an appreciation of the taxation procedures that apply to small business;
- be able to demonstrate comprehension of the forms of business structure available to small business and explain their advantages and disadvantages.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- concepts of management and financial management in small agribusiness;
- financial statements and the evaluation of past performance;
- planning ahead: an overview of budgeting; preparing budgets;
- financing the business; sources of finance; planning the financial structure of the business;
- income taxation and GST in Australia,
- using discounted cash flow and other techniques to evaluate investment projects,
- business structure.
