Abstract:
Students in this subject take a detailed look at the concept and practice of sustainable development in the context of industrialised economies. The first four topics explore the 'theory' of sustainability and efforts to incorporate it into policy and planning; the fifth topic introduces the concept of business sustainability. The final two topics consider the practicalities of implementing sustainable management in businesses and organisations.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Be able to accurately identify and analyse the diverse meanings given to sustainability and sustainable development
- Be able to critically evaluate these meanings and define the key components of sustainability
- Be able to retrace the development of the idea of sustainability and the debate about its nature and relevance to local, national and global issues
- Be able to relate and apply sustainable development concepts and approaches to issues of sustainability at broad industry and societal levels
- Be able to demonstrate an understanding of and analyse a variety of theoretical and practical approaches to implementing sustainable management in practice
- Be able to utilise a selected sustainability management tool in a business or organisational context
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Environmental issues and problems in industrialised and developing economies
- The history of environmentalism and the rise of sustainability in mainstream social, economic and political thought
- Ecologically sustainable development (ESD) in Australia
- The economic, social and ecological dimensions of sustainability; ethical issues
- Theoretical approaches to managing for sustainability
- Practical approaches to achieving sustainable development
