Abstract:

The Applied Studies B subject is offered to provide students the opportunity to undertake project work that allows students to apply theory to practical situations of their choosing. Such project work will normally be an individual piece of applied study negotiated between the student and his/her supervisor. All Applied Studies activities are subject to the approval of the Subject Coordinator. Applied Studies B is offered at Level 2 and activities taken within this subject should reflect the Faculty's expectation of subjects at this level. Level 2 students would be expected to display significant higher order learning such as evaluation and other critical thinking skills.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

be able to:

- critically analyse a chosen topic area or technology and make recommendations as to the efficiency/effectiveness of that topic area or technology
- evaluate the commercial options that impact on the identified outcomes
- outline and discuss the recommended option/s to be adopted

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

Applied studies B will be project based on an applied case study that intends to demonstrate improvement to the present situation or processes. The project will involve an academic facilitator (a School member) nominated by the student and approved by the subject coordinator. The methodology used in the case study should follow the points outlined below: Overview of the case study and present situation Literature review of the situation/technology/focus of improvement Identification of the options available from the literature review Development of an improvement strategy from the options identified
