Abstract:
This subject provides students with the concepts, knowledge and skills needed to design and implement a rural property plan that responds to the complex demands of sustainable development. Students will recognise the benefits of physical property planning, and learn how to weigh up the sometimes conflicting demands of environmental and economic goals in whole farm management. They will also critically reflect on the needs of the wider catchment ecosystem, and attempt to come to a balanced view on the role of agricultural production within a rural environment. Students will also prepare development plans for a specific property aimed at long term sustainability; then, in the role of project manager, demonstrate an ability to evaluate technical details for selected aspects of the plan.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
Be able to appraise the biophysical resources of a rural property;
Be able to evaluate current land use practices from a sustainability perspective;
Be able to analyse the issues influencing future land use, and identify appropriate land management strategies;
Be able to develop a biophysical plan for property development and/or restoration, based upon sustainable management of the natural resources of the property and its surroundings, which addresses business, operational and environmental issues;
Be able to reflect on the planning process, and evaluate their ability to manage in relation to biophysical property planning.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
the impact of agriculture on the environment the biophysical planning process appraising the biophysical resources property planning for sustainable, productive and economic land use property planning and the environmental/catchment context case study.
