Abstract:

Managing People in Agriculture is designed to develop competencies in managing oneself and working with people on a one-to-one basis or in teams. The first module deals with self awareness, self management and self development. The second module introduces interpersonal skills critical to effective communication such as good listening, assertiveness, negotiation and conflict resolution. The third module covers group effectiveness and group facilitation. The subject is experientially based.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

Be able to develop an understanding of experiential learning and its role in learning and skills development.
Be able to explain the distinction between self concept and self esteem and their role in self development.
Be able to explain the importance of self knowledge in management and its role in creating a more effective management.
Be able to understand that people are different with varying sets of learning styles and personality needs and fears.
Be able to discuss and demonstrate effective methods of conflict resolution including negotiations skills
Be able to relate the skills developed in interpersonal communication with the role of people in agriculture
Be able to identify methods to effectively manage group relationships and group tasks
Be able to implement procedures to improve group effectiveness
analyse effective group facilitation processes.
Be able to develop a plan of action to develop their emotional intelligence.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

Specific competencies relating to: self knowledge learning styles and its impact on personal development including studies creativity model of effective communication and supportive communication conflict resolution negotiation emotional intelligence communicating in rural communities basics of group effectiveness managing group relationships managing the group task group facilitation

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 2 day residential school.

This is a skills development workshop involving emotional intelligence. Students can expect to apply concepts relating to conflict resolution and self-development.
