This subject focuses on major issues and viewpoints confronting industrialised agriculture and society in relation to conservation of the environment and sustainable development.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Be able to discuss alternative viewpoints on sustainability and sustainable agriculture
- Be able to synthesise differing viewpoints and elements of sustainability into a coherent framework and set of principles or definitions
- Be able to analyise of the sustainability of an agricultural region or industry
- Be able to critically review academic literature and provide other contributions to discussions about sustainable agriculture

- Agriculture in the new millennium
- The nature of sustainability and sustainable development
- Alternative conceptions of sustainable development
- Sustainable agriculture
- Paradigms of sustainable agriculture
