Abstract:
This subject requires students to undertake an approved placement for the equivalent of four weeks with an agribusiness, service or retail organisation relevant to their course (this may be with their current employer). Students will investigate and reflect upon the context and processes of management and/or production (relevant to their course) in the work environment they observe and experience; analyse outcomes; and formulate solutions to issues they identify. The expectation is that this placement will be undertaken in the latter stages of their course, so students can apply information and techniques obtained and developed in earlier subjects.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Be able to analyse and contextualise aspects of management and/or production during their industry placement.
- Be able to identify issues within the business/organisation and formulate appropriate solutions.
- Be able to determine the linkages between the theory and the observed practice associated with two management and/or production topics
- Be more 'industry ready' through completion of their work placement
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Four weeks equivalent industry placement covering the following topics:
- Introduction and guidance regarding industry placements
- Learning in the workplace
- continuous learning model
- workplace as a social context
- learning from action
- learning in the workplace is cognitively different
- benefits to the individual and to the organisation
- Workplace culture - effect on the development and management of human resources
- Types of workplace learning
- formal, informal, incidental
- transformational learning
- reflecting on the learning process
- Preparing a business overview report
- Identification of issues in the workplace and formulation of solutions.
Workplace Learning
This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 20 days duration.
Students are required to undertake an approved placement with an agribusiness (on or off-farm), service or retail organisation relevant to their course, over a period equivalent to 20 working days. They will investigate and reflect on the context and processes of management and/or production in the work environment they observe and experience, and analyse management and/or production outcomes.
The expectation is that the placement will be undertaken towards the latter stages of their course so the students can apply information and techniques obtained and developed in earlier subjects.
Specialised Resources
Students will be required to travel to their workplace. In some instances, students will be required to arrange their own accommodation during this period(s).
