ASC148 Introductory Horse Management (8)

CSU Discipline Area: Animal and Vet Science (ANVET)

Abstract:

This is an introductory subject which examines the horse as performance and companion animal. Key subject areas such as safety, breeds, nutrition, biology, anatomy, husbandry and management are introduced. Sound horse management principles with emphasis on horse welfare and safety are taught.

Primarily for students in the BappSc (Equine Studies) course; others with the permission of the subject coordinator. Places limited

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

understand the rationale for basic horse management practices and be able to implement them.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

(a) Safety in horse handling (b) Evolution and breed development (c) Nutrition (d) Health (e) Husbandry techniques (c) Introduction to Anatomy and physiology (d) Introduction to Biomechanics.

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 2 day residential school.
