ASC160 Horse Structure and Function (8)

Abstract:

Students are introduced to the structure and function of horses as performance animals including the muscular, skeletal, digestive, cardiovascular, respiratory, sensory and reproductive systems. Alterations to structure and function through injury and disease are also considered.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

Be able to summarise the evolution of the horse and relate this to the Australian horse industry
Be able to outline the development of major breeds and the purposes for which they were developed
Be able to describe the selection of individual horses for specific purposes
Be able to identify and describe the major components and functions and abnormalities of the function of the muscular, skeletal and reproductive systems.
Be able to describe the function of the sensory system of the horse
Be able to describe the structure and function and abnormalities of function of the circulatory and respiratory systems of horses
Be able to relate nutritional principles to practical horse feeding and formulate balanced feed rations

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

evolution of the horse horse breeds basic anatomical structures and functions of the horse common injuries and illnesses of the horse basic feeding and nutrition
