Abstract:
This subject introduces students to the principles of mammalian physiology and applied anatomy as it relates to farm animals, horses and wildlife. The integration and control of all major organ systems are studied including cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary, nervous, digestive and musculoskeletal systems.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Be able to accurately explain the concepts involved in maintenance of homeostasis in the body
- Be able to demonstrate an understanding of the roles of the major endocrine organs in control of body functions
- Be able to demonstrate an understanding of the functions of the blood and know the components that make up the blood
- Be able to demonstrate an understanding of and explain the importance of body water
- Be able to explain the thermoregulatory responses of the body and the involvement of the skin in these processes
- Be able to explain the concepts involved in growth and development of the mammalian body
- Be able to explain the role and actions of the nervous, cardiovascular, skeletal and muscle systems within the body
- Be able to draw schematic diagrams of the major organ systems of the body
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Cells, homeostasis, body water - Blood - Respiratory system - Renal system - Heart and cardiovascular system - Digestive system - Endocrine system - Nervous system - Musculoskeletal system - Skin and thermoregulation - Growth and development
Residential School
This subject contains a compulsory 3 day residential school.
The resdidential school provides a hands on approach to the theory taught in the subject. This includes lectures and laboratory work.
