Abstract:
This subject explores the procedures of assisted equine reproductive technologies. The subject assists students to examine opportunities and develop skills in stallion semen collection, evaluation and processing, semen transport, semen freezing and thawing and artificial insemination of mares.

Restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Equine Science and Bachelor of Equine Science (Honours).
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Be able to demonstrate an understanding of and perform the process of semen collection, evaluation, processing, freezing, storage and thawing. This is achieved through a series of individual competency-based assessments at the Veterinary Clinical Centre's Theriogenology unit.
- Be able to manage transport of frozen and chilled semen.
- Be able to manage the process of artificial insemination of mares to maximise the pregnancy rate. This includes performance of the artificial insemination technique in a sterile manner.
- Understand the various advanced reproductive technologies available for use in horses and their use in practice.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Semen collection
- Semen evaluation
- Semen freezing
- Managing semen transport.
- Ultrasonic imaging in mare reproduction management.
- Semen handling for insemination
- Artificial insemination
- Embryo transfer and other advanced reproductive techniques
- Legal and ethical aspects of reproductive management in horses.
Residential School
This subject contains a compulsory 4 day residential school.
The Residential school will give students training and assessment in skills of semen collection, semen assessment, semen processing for chilled shipment, semen freezing, semen thawing and artificial insemination. Students will be trained in each of the six practical skills, then allowed an opportunity to practice the skills under supervision, before being individually assessed on each skill.
