ASC273 Animal Nutrition (8)
CSU Discipline Area: Animal and Vet Science (ANVET)
Duration: One session
Abstract:
This subject is an introduction to the principles of ruminant and monogastric (mainly horses) nutrition. All students will complete a module covering nutrients in animal feeds, nutrient digestion, absorption and metabolism. Students studying Equine Studies will then complete modules covering feeding standards for horses and the application of scientific principles to the practical feeding of horses. Students enrolled in other courses will complete modules covering feeding standards for ruminants and the application of these to sheep and cattle.

Prerequisite(s):
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Be able to list key nutrients for animals
- Be able to outline how carbohydrates, lipids and proteins can be categorised
- Be able to describe the digestion of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins in monogastrics and ruminants
- Be able to describe the functions of minerals and vitamins in the nutrition of animals, and list deficiency symptoms and sources of these nutrients
