Abstract:
Horse health and rehabilitation is designed to equip you with the necessary information enabling you to perform basic health and rehabilitation practices in horses. The subject will discuss common diseases and disorders in horses, evaluate the role of management in the control and recovery periods, and examine the role of conventional and complementary therapies in the disease process. The subject is not designed to give you a veterinary knowledge of this area, rather to give you the ability to work with professional practitioners in an educated manner.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
Be able to describe the basis of common diseases and disorders in the horse including normal defence and recovery process for a range of disease and injury situations
Be able to relate the aetiology and potential progression of common equine injury and disease processes to treatment and prevention options available for these conditions
Be able to evaluate the role of management, husbandry and therapy in the control prevention and rehabilitation in equine disease and injury
Be able to evaluate the use of conventional and alternative or complementary therapies in treating equine injuries and diseases
Be able to explain the basis and operation of legal restrictions placed on lay people in the treating of equine diseases and disorders and determine when it is necessary for professional/ veterinary intervention in different circumstances

The Pathology of disease and injury in the horse The function of the immune system in the repair and recovery process Epidemiology of common equine diseases and disorders The role of management in the control and prevention of equine diseases and disorders The role of management in the recovery process following injury The role of veterinary, alternative and complementary therapies in horse health management Legal and ethical implications of health management in horses
