ASC406 Animal Therapeutics (8)

Abstract:

This subject will extend students into the multi-million dollar veterinary pharmaceutical industry and the adventure of drug discovery. The work of bodies that approve, regulate and monitor the use of therapeutic agents in animals will also be examined. The principles of drug action will examined at an advanced level and the major classes of therapeutic agent will be investigated. Alternative or complementary therapies will also be examined and discussed.

This subject is for students in an approved postgraduate course.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to describe the significance, from both an economic and ethical perspective, the animal health industry and its regulation
- be able to explain the  principles and practice of drug discovery and development
- be able to explain the principles of drug action and pharmacokinetics  and be able to explain the action and pharmokinetics of at least two specific drugs (as examples)
- be able to describe the major classes of drugs used in animals  and provide specific examples for various animal species
- be able to expound, argue or state a rational view on complementary therapies

This subject is clearly differentiated from the paired subject, ASC306, in that the learning objectives and assessment clearly reflect the higher level offering appropriate to Master level learning.
