Abstract:

In this subject students will undertake an extensive and critical review of the literature topical for their research and career interests. The context of the literature reviewed may be as broad or as focused as is required to meet the demands of their research project or their course-work speciality. These may include aspects of animal production, conservation biology and wildlife management and the science underpinning these vocations. Skills in oral communication of critiques will be a central focus of the subject

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

be able to evaluate critically scientific publications in terms of content and experimental design
be able to deliver oral critiques effectively
be able to express criticism of publications succinctly in written format
be able to develop from these critiques balanced reviews of the literature on specific subjects and written at a level appropriate for postgraduate level studies

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

Training in the development of expression in oral format
Developing skills in succinct writing
Training in the critical analysis of scientific literature
Instruction in the evolution of balanced reviews of the literature on specific topics.
Critical analysis of specific topics issues relating to animal production, conservation biology and wildlife management.
