Abstract:
This subject involves study of preventative measures in equine health, with emphasis on the importance of industry management in creating a situation with minimal risk of disease for horses. A compulsory 3-day residential school forms part of this subject delivery.

Assumed Knowledge:
It is assumed students will have general knowledge in the areas of horse anatomy and physiology as well as animal health.
Enrolment restrictions:
Postgraduate students only
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to list the physiological parameters of a horse considered to be healthy (ie a 'normal' horse)
- be able to describe how disease processes may alter normal physiological parameters and processes in the horse
- be able to demonstrate how to objectively assess a horse's health status
- be able to implement a detailed health management program for a group of horses, including horses of varying physiological status
- be able to justify their horse care practices based on scientific principles (evidence based)
- be able to incorporate best practice into their individual horse and multi horse care routines
- be able to make an informed decision on whether veterinary assistance is required for a horse problem
- be able to critically analyse the various sources of information available to horse owners / managers
- This subject is clearly differentiated from the paired subject, ASC413, in that the learning objectives and assessment clearly reflect the higher level offering appropriate to Master level learning.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Horse housing/location and its relevance in a horse health context.
- Horse movement from one location to another and its relevance to horse health
- Monitoring and recording horse health
- Preventative horse healthcare
Residential School
This subject contains a compulsory 3 day residential school.
The Residential School for ASC513 will provide a hands-on approach to the theory taught.
