Abstract:
This subject aims to familiarise students with the overall discipline of medical science that they will encounter during employment. It introduces them to quality assurance/control philosophy as it applies to a workplace environment and safety; aims to begin development of laboratory skills, an understanding of laboratory instrumentation and calibration; introduces them to a range of professional and ethical issues related to medical science.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
* have an overview of the disciplines of medical science that they will encounter during employment and an appreciation of where medical science sits in the Health Care environment;
* have an understanding of quality assurance/control philosophy as it applies to a workplace environment and safety
have begun to develop information literacy skills;
* have begun to develop both written and oral communication skills appropriate for science;
* begun development of laboratory skills, and an understanding of laboratory instrumentation and calibration;
* have an introduction to a range of professional and ethical issues related to medical science including research.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
introduction to the general medical science discipline areas such as pathology, biotechnology, respiratory science and pharmaceutics, including clinical and industrial visits QA/QC laboratory content: safety, instrumentation, pipetting, calibrating, microscopy communication skills: library familiarisation, literature searches, written and oral presentations, scientific report writing; professional and ethical issues: patient confidentiality, patenting, research ethics, professional development, professional associations and membership.
Residential School
