Abstract:
This subject provides current information on the applications of microbiology and its links with biotechnology - both 'traditional biotechnology' eg wastewater processing and also the 'new Biotechnology'.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
* be able to describe the underlying principles of bacterial genetics, the importance of extrachromosomal elements and their role in antibiotic resistance;
* discuss the role of the microbiologist in industrial fermentations, describe the use of microorganisms in biotechnology and some industrial processes;
* describe the role of microorganisms in a number of areas of applied microbiology including sewage and wastewater treatment, biological control and food production.

The syllabus will cover the following topics: Module 1: Topics in Microbial Biotechnology * Sewage and wastewater treatment; * Microbial transformations of xenobiotic compounds; * Detection methods for pathogens; * Biological control; * Microorganisms and food production * Microbial killing, pasteurisation, disinfection and preservatives. * Algal biotechnology. Module 2: Bacterial genetics * Organisation of the bacterial chromosome, procaryotic DNA replication; * Procaryotic transcription and translation and regulation of gene expression. * Extrachromosomal elements Module 3: Industrial microbial fermentations * Isolation of microorganisms; * Strain improvement; * Fermentable substrates; * Inoculum production; * Outline of an industrial fermentation. * Fermentation of engineered microorganisms. * Antibiotic production
