Abstract:

This subject covers the theory and practice of section cutting and staining. Topics covered include: paraffin-wax section processing and staining; cell chemistry; fixation and staining theory; special methods such as resin and frozen sections, enzyme- and immuno-histochemistry, bone decalcification, diagnostic cytology and microscope optics.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

* have an understanding of normal vertebrate tissue structure
* have a basic knowledge of the theory of fixation, processing and staining of animal tissue
* be proficient in the preparation of paraffin-wax sections
* be proficient in H&E staining and selected special stains and immunohistochemistry
* have an understanding of various other methods used in the laboratory eg resin embedding, frozen sections.
