Abstract:
This subject continues the study of the structure and function of the lower limb and related structures in association with the establishment of techniques in examination, evaluation and treatment of biomechanical disorders. Areas of study include, introduction to pathomechanics of the foot and lower limb and principles and practices of orthotic therapy.

(BMS171 and BMS172 ) or BMS150
Enrolment restrictions:
Bachelor of Podiatry, Bachelor of Podiatry (Honours).
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate a detailed and thorough understanding of the anatomy of the pelvis, lower limb and specifically the foot and ankle;
- be able to identify and describe the normal function of the joints and related structures of the pelvis and lower limb;
- be able to demonstrate skills in examination of the joints and related structures to identify features including the: range of motion, quality of motion, muscle function and strength, and the position of the axes of rotation;
- be able to identify and discuss aberrations of the gait cycle and their underlying pathomechanical aetiologies;
- be able to demonstarte critical and evaluative skills in the area of clinical gait and biomechanical analysis with respect to current paradigms and practice;
- be able to discuss the therapeutic modalities used in biomechanical case management, including theories of orthotic therapy, in shoe non-cast devices, casting, splinting and adjunctive physical therapies;
- be able to discuss the prescription of footwear and the role of footwear and biomechanics.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Clinical anatomy of the pelvis, lower limb, the foot & ankle.
- Axes and ranges of motion of : normal joints, abnormal joints.
- Examination and evaluation of the joints and muscles of the lower limb to identify features including the: range of motion, quality of motion, muscle function and strength, and the position of the axes of rotation.
- Clinical gait analysis, how to assess appropriate phasing, distinguish between normal and abnormal gait, relate gait findings to non-weight bearing assessment, diagnose gross and functional gait anomalies.
- Theories of podiatric biomechanics including but not limited to, Root model, Sagittal plane model, Tissue stress models.
- Pathomechanics, including examining, evaluating and managing extrinsic and intrinsic foot anomalies.
- Principles of orthotic science: Chairside devices, non cast devices, cast devices, strapping, splinting and casting, adjunctive physical therapies.
- Footwear and the relationship to functional biomechanics; footwear prescription, advice, assessment
