Abstract:

This subject introduces fundamental concepts of drug action (pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics). There is an emphasis on cardiac, renal, and respiratory pharmacology that is vital for the treatment of major cardiopulmonary pathologies. Additionally, pharmacological treatments for diabetes and thyroid disorders, and pharmaceutical manipulation of the immune system and the action of anti-inflammatory drugs, are discussed. This subject builds upon an understanding of the fundamentals of physiology. It assumes knowledge of basic chemistry, biochemistry, and basic human physiology. In particular, a fundamental understanding of the cardiovascular, renal, respiratory and immune systems will be required.
