BMS324 Immunohaematology and Blood Transfusion (8)
CSU Discipline Area: Biomedical Science (BIMSC)
Duration: One session
Abstract:
This subject considers the theoretical and practical aspects of blood group serology and blood transfusion, with a comprehensive laboratory component focussing on blood group serology. Distance students will complete the required practical component of the subject at a 3 day residential school.

Prerequisite(s):
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to describe the techniques used for the detection and identification of blood group antibodies, the immune haemolytic anaemias and haemolytic disease of the newborn;
- be able to demonstrate competency in performing the techniques used for the detection and identification of blood group antibodies, the immune haemolytic anaemias and haemolytic disease of the newborn;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the organisation of a blood bank, product quality control, the selection and testing of donors, blood collection, storage and preservation;
- be able to describe the frequently used blood products available in Australia, their indications for use and possible adverse effects associated with blood transfusion;
- be able to perform laboratory tests applicable to the selection of donor blood for transfusion.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
Module 1: Introduction to Immunohaematology
This module reviews the prior knowledge in basic genetics and immunology required. It also introduces the reagents and methods used in immunohaematology.
Module 2: Erythrocyte Blood Groups
This module covers the ABO, Rh and other clinically significant blood group systems. It also covers red cell antibody detection and identification.
Module 3: Blood and Blood Products
This module focuses on blood donor selection, testing of donated blood and component preparation. Indications for blood transfusion, compatbility testing, complications of transfusion and transfusion alternative are also covered.
Module 4: Clinical considerations important to Immunohaematology
This module focuses haemolytic disease of the foetus and newborn, foeto-maternal alloimmune thrombocytopaenia and immune mediated haemolytic anaemia.
Module 5: Quality and Regulations
This module covers regulations associated with transfusion laboratories in Australia, quality systems and information technology and automation.
Residential School
This subject contains a compulsory 3 day residential school.
Students will complete a Blood Transfusion competency examination at the residential school.
