Abstract:
Covers the practical aspects of clinical cardiovascular measurement techniques, including resting, ambulatory, exercise and intracardiac ECGs, cardiac pacing and haemodynamic monitoring. Emphasis is placed on quality of measurements and their interpretation.

Restricted to students enrolled in Bachelor of Medical Science, Clinical Physiology specialisation and generic course only
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
* prepare the patient and equipment for clinical 12 lead ECG measurement
* demonstrate correct electrode positioning for 12 lead ECG's and discuss the effect of incorrect placement
* identify the source of recording artefacts
* record ECG's from neonates, children and adults
* identify the waveform components of the normal ECG
* calculate heart rate and describe normal and abnormal rhythms
* complete procedures necessary for ambulatory ECG monitoring
* discuss clinical indicators for cardiac pacing
* describe single and dual chamber pacing
* discuss procedure for pacemaker check
* explain the recording of a intracardiac electrocardiogram
* identify paced and non paced rhythms from ECG recordings
* analyse pulse rate and pulse duration of an implanted pacemaker
* describe heart valve and septal defects and their effect on physiological function
* assemble and calibrate equipment for recording cardiovascular pressures
* describe operation of blood pressure transducer and tap connectors
* identify the effect of artefacts on the blood pressure signal
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
* patient preparation for resting, ambulatory or exercise stress ECG recording, * instrument characteristics including electrical calibration, electrode care and placement * cardiac electrophysiology * ECG interpretation including rate and rhythm analysis * paediatric electrocardiography * intracardiac electrocardiology * cardiac pacing * haemodynamic monitoring * interventional cardiology
