Abstract:
In this subject students will draw together the knowledge gained in their study of physiology, biochemistry, human genetics and cell biology, haematology and histopathology to examine the molecular basis of disease. This subject will take a multi-disciplinary approach to the topic and focus on the application of molecular techniques to assist in the diagnosis of disease in a medical laboratory setting and how these techniques can be used to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of emerging diseases. This subject includes a practical component; distance students will complete this component at a 3 day residential school.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Be able to describe the molecular basis of diseases relevant to medical laboratory scientists
- Be able to explain how cytogenetics may be used in the diagnosis of disease
- Be able to explain the practice of ''molecular medicine'' and the translational aspects of molecular pathology: molecular diagnostics, molecular assessment, and personalized medicine
- Be able to justify the use of a particular diagnosis technique within a pathology setting and to assess both the benefits and limitations of the teachnique

Be able critically evaluate the use of molecular techniques in the diagnosis and treatment of disease
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
Topic 1 - Introduction to the subject (revision)
- This will contain a brief over view of classical pathology, molecular biology and genetics and integrative systems biology
Topic 2 – Molecular basis of disease
- Cardiovascular disease
- Diseases of the kidney
- Skin disease
- Diseases of the nervous system
- Pulmonary disease
Topic 3 - Diagnostic techniques
- Practice of molecular medicine
- Molecular diagnosis of human disease (including cytogenetics)
- Molecular assessment of human disease in the clinical laboratory
- Pharmacogenomics and personalized medicine in the treatment of human disease
Residential School
This subject contains a compulsory 3 day residential school.
The residential school will provide students with the opportunity to practice some of the techniques discussed in the subject. Students will also present short seminars on the topics they have selected for the subject's major assessment item.
