Abstract:

This subject considers the concept of research in the Biomedical Sciences such that students acquire the skills and knowledge required for independent scholarship or research.
Students are introduced to the various methodological resaerch approaches, both qualitative and quantitative. Students will gain an understanding of research design, implementation and analysis and formulate their own research project with academic supervision.

Enrolment restrictions:

Honours students enrolled in Bachelor of Medical Science(Hons) and Bachelor of Biotechnology (Medical) (Hons) and Bachelor of Health Science (Hons) courses.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

* understand the primary means for dissemination of research findings.
* understand the requirements and procedures for ethical, and other approval, for research.
* define a research project using methodologies appropriate to their field of research.
* be able to evaluate the technical and theoretical knowledge and identify its potential for application to research or practical use.
* be able to formulate a research proposal and design a research project using appropriate research methods.
* understand qualitative and quantitative research methods.
* be able to apply the appropriate concepts of statistical analysis for their research.
* have a sound knowledge of technical and theoretical aspects of the nominated topic area and be able to write a scientific review of the literature concerned with that topic.
* complete a review of the literature relevant to the topic of their research project.
* prepare and present seminars covering their research topic or the methodologies involved.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

* Laboratory Safety.
* Occupational Health & Safety.
* Animal & human Ethics: approvals requirements for laboratory based research.
* Quantitative and qualitative research methods: Experimental Design and implementation.
* Data and statistical Analysis (project specific with supervisors).
* Presentation and analysis of research findings
* Electronic data bases and electronic literature resources.
* Preparation of a research proposal.
* Preparation of a literature review.
