Abstract:
This subject is intended for international students who are marginally below the normal university English entry level requirements. It will assist students to improve their English language and academic skills and to be better prepared for their academic studies. This subject will cover effective reading, note taking and paraphrasing, writing an academic essay, improving writing skills, oral presentations and listening.

Enrolment restrictions:
Only available to full-fee paying international students. Not available to international students who have met CSU's English language entry requirements except where prior approval has been given by their Course Manager.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate a suitable level of reading
- be able to take notes, paraphrase and summarise academic resources
- be able to develop an academic argument
- be able to write an academic essay
- be able to correctly reference academic work
- be able to compose written materials that illustrate acceptable levels of grammar and vocabulary
- be able to demonstrate appropriate oral skills to communicate effectively
- be able to listen and comprehend in a classroom environment

- Effective reading for academic purposes - Note-taking paraphrasing and summarising - Academic argument - Essay writing - Academic conventions - Improving your writing - Oral presentation skills - Active listening
