The philosophy of the analytical method is introduced via a study of commonly used analytical techniques. The latter include chromatographic, spectroscopic and electrochemical procedures. Classical wet chemical methods are reviewed.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
* have an appreciation of the general philosophy of the analytical approach to qualitative and quantitative analysis including the need for accuracy and precision;
* be able to perform basic gravimetric, volumetric, chromatographic, electrochemical and spectroscopic calculations;
* have knowledge of a range of common wet chemical and instrumental techniques used in quantitative and qualitative analysis.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
Terminology of analytical chemistry (accuracy, precision, sensitivity, detection limit, selectivity, specificity, etc); The analytical method; Comparison of analytical techniques; Electrochemical analysis; Chromatographic analysis; Spectroscopic analysis.
Residential School
