Abstract:
This subject provides an insight into the contexts of Indigenous health focussing on Aboriginal history, identity and culture, Aboriginal self-determination, self-management and community development, and contemporary Indigenous and societal issues influencing health status.

Enrolment restrictions:
Bachelor of Health Science (Community and Public Health) students only.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
* demonstrate an understanding of personal history, the importance of identity and cultural influences and how these impact on the health and well being of Aboriginal peoples.
Describe, discuss and research the development of contemporary, political, economic, social and health policies and legislation affecting Indigenous progress towards self-management and self-determination local, regional, state and national levels.
* analyse the long-term effects of protection, preservation, assimilation, dependency and integration on the health and well being of Aboriginal people and develop strategies for bringing about change.
* Critique current Aboriginal issues (eg. deaths in custody, Council of Aboriginal Reconciliation, Wik, Mabo, the Maka Raka, and Sovereignty etc) and show their inter-relationship with the health and well being of Aboriginal peoples.
* Describe and analyse the current health status of Indigenous Australians.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
* Aboriginal belief systems. * Traditional Aboriginal society and law. * Aboriginal kinship, family ties and communication. * Constructing and researching a personal history. * Concepts of Aboriginal health and wellbeing. * Concepts of self-determination and self-management. * Long term influences on Aboriginal health and wellbeing. * Current health status of Indigenous Australians. * Current debates and inter-relationships about health status. * Community development and health. * Strategies to influence the health status of Indigenous Australians.
Residential School
This subject contains a compulsory 10 day residential school.
A residential school is offered to enhance the students learning experience. Time is spent delivering lectures and tutorials. As well CSU's Indigenous support unit offers additional intensive support to students. During this time the student is acclimatised to the rigour of academic study.
