Abstract:
This subject introduces students to the theory behind general skills of contemporary clinical health work. The subject aims to provide students with skill, knowledge and attitudes to accurately and competently relate, compare with normal range and manage the results of basic clinical measures. Students will be made aware of relevant workplace health and safety issues in all situations and are required to demonstrate safe working practices. Students will need to demonstrate competence in a range of clinical settings and procedures and to recognise the limitations of their practice. Students will undertake clinical practicums under the auspices of their own clinical work setting and in conjunction with their workplace supervisors.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Describe, compare and report on normal range of clinical
observations demonstrating an understanding of normal
physiology.
- Describe the roles of various members of the health care team
and their role in client management.
- Recognise, provide early intervention, refer and report on
critical medical incidents.
- Demonstrate the ability to determine the need for, arrange and
execute the evacuation of clients to medical safety.
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate complex medical
procedures in varied contexts.
- Describe various medical processes to enable comprehensive
client understanding of health needs.
- Demonstrate the process of informing people about various
medical procedures
- Correctly interpret terminology relevant to areas studied.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Observe Pulse, Temp, BP, Respiratory, Hydration, Weight, Urine, Cholesterol, BSL and mental status. - Recognise and provide early intervention prior to seeking medical help for Acute diabetes, asthma, Abdominal pain, Chest Pain, Respiratory Infection, Middle ear infection, trauma, cardiovascular disease, Alcohol withdrawal, dehydration, failure to thrive, diarrhoea, epilepsy, meningitis, and multi pathology. - Provide the client with information about the medical management of Acute diabetes, asthma, Abdominal pain, Chest Pain, Respiratory Infection, Middle ear infection, trauma, cardiovascular disease, Alcohol withdrawal, dehydration, failure to thrive, diarrhoea, epilepsy, meningitis, and multi pathology. - Communication skills
Residential School
This subject contains a compulsory 5 day residential school.
Residentials will provide students with intensive support with lectures and tutorials providing the studends with enough support to achieve satisfactory subject performance outcomes.
