Abstract:
This subject is an introduction to the vast area of contemporary Indigenous health specialities. The study provides structured readings as well as requiring the collection, analysis and interpretation of new data. The students will be expected to relate their study to practical issues affecting their profession or position.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
* understand barriers to implementation of effective strategies for health education and promotion.
* understand the concepts and philosophies that underpin strategies for cross-cultural health and education.
* be able to apply the knowledge gained to the student's professional practice.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
* Status of Indigenous health: rural and metropolitan differences; comparisons to the rest of Australia; comparisons to other Indigenous societies; comparisons to other countries and the world. * History of attempts to address the issues the health statistics raise. * Strategies for cross cultural communication in health and education. * Philosophies and concepts of cross-cultural communication. * Evaluating strategy outcomes. * Identifying barriers to successful implementation.
