Abstract:
This subject aims to extend the students' knowledge and clinical skills required for the care of patients experiencing acute health emergencies, particularly cardiovascular and respiratory emergencies. Students will need to integrate pathophysiological principles and assessment findings to implement advanced life support (ALS) care for the patient with medical emergencies, including the management of obstetric, neonatal and paediatric emergencies.

Assumed Knowledge:
APS401 Prehospital Pharmacology or equivalent
A practical understanding of medical maths and medication administration and experience with attaining and interpreting a basic ECG.
Enrolment restrictions:
Graduate Diploma of Clinical Practice (Paramedic).
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to
- - demonstrate knowledge of the pathophysiology of acute medical emergencies in neonates, children, and adults
- - articulate the correlations between the recognition of signs and symptoms and the consequent clinical management;
- - discuss and justify both the theoretical and practical management of selected medical emergencies.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- 1) Infectious and communicable diseases, allergies, anaphylaxis, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease;
- 2) Diseases of haematological, gastrointestinal, renal, and endocrine systems;
- 3) Cardiovascular emergencies;
- 4) Neurological emergencies.
- 5) Obstetrical emergencies
- 6) Neonatal and paediatric emergencies
