This subject introduces the basics of professional writing for the communication industries. Through the application of theory and practice, students gain a solid understanding of genre, style and narrative form in the professional communication context.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
* be able to apply the principles of "good writing" to their professional work
* be able to write an essay in the appropriate professional style
* be able to write a press release, a basic news story, a short radio piece, advertising copy, and a basic script incorporating dialogue
* be able to use a word processor to produce documents
* be able to operate computers in both PC and Macintosh environments
* be able to communicate online, via email, newsgroups and IRC
* be able to undertake basic desktop publishing tasks including; sign and layout, basic type manipulation, importing of graphics and downloading of graphics
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
-genre, style and narrative in professional writing -functional grammar for media professionals -observation, interview and dialogue exercises -recognising "good design" -capturing the audience through design -basic document design principles for effective communication -basic graphic design principles and poster exercise
