Abstract:

In this subject students are introduced to the foundation principles underlying the development of non-fiction video, television or film from the perspective of the director. The subject develops preliminary directing skills through a sequence of steps in pre-production. The subject introduces students to film language as a way of developing skills in the medium. Students study the genre of information programs. The subject develops preliminary directing skills through students conceptualising a script, writing a treatment and undertaking primary research. The subject requires students demonstrate an understanding of information program direction by developing a script and storyboard for a short segment of video, television or film.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

be able to complete a production proposal document;
be able to develop a treatment for a non-fiction program;
be able to undertake primary research for a non-fiction based script;
be able to develop a non-fiction based script;
be able to produce a production storyboard;
be able to articulate the research and preparation skills required for non-fiction based genres;
be able to appreciate the possibilities and constraints on a non-fiction production.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

defining genre; role of the director in preproduction; director as primary researcher; fundamental interviewing skills; scriptwriting; film language; storyboarding.
