Abstract:
This subject examines issues and ideological contexts around portrayal and representation of Indigenous people as practiced in the Communication and Creative Industries. It is aimed at developing in students skills for culturally competent CCI practice.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be aware of their relative power position in Australian society as either an Australian Indigenous or non-Indigenous person
- have understanding of the ideological context within which historical representation and portrayal of Australian Indigenous people occurred.
- be able to analyse and critique contemporary portrayal and representation of Australian Indigenous people across a range of Communication and Creative Industry disciplines
- be able to analyse and critique contemporary portrayal and representation of Australian Indigenous people with particular reference to their own practice discipline area of study.
- have skills in applying Australian Indigenous cultural awareness and competence to Communication and Creative Industry practice
- have skills in applying Australian Indigenous cultural awareness and competence to their specific Communication and Creative Industry discipline of study
- have knowledge of Australian Indigenous culturally competent CCI practice to enable them to represent Australian Indigenous people to a range of Indigenous and non-Indigenous audiences with cultural competence
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- history of Australian Indigenous portrayals and representation to non-Indigenous audiences
- Australian post 1967 referendum media contexts
- cultural positioning, power and Australian media narratives
- industry protocols including ethical standards and codes of ethicals of related professional bodies
- methodologies for self analysis of attitudes, experience and expectations
- analysis and critique of contemporary portrayals and representation of Australian Indigenous people in Communication and Creative Industry practice
- culturally competent Communication and Creative Industry practice
