Abstract:

This subject examines the nature of the communications industries in contemporary societies, with a particular focus on Australia. It introduces students to some important sociological concepts and suggests ways in which these can be used to critically examine the structures, meaning and interpretations of the media. Students are encouraged to discuss current issues in relation to control, regulation and the future of the communications industries.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to analyse media messages from a variety of positions
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the structures and processes of the Australian media industries
- be able to reflect critically on the future direction of popular culture
