Abstract:

A subject in which students examine the contemporary performance, communication, design or television literature, focussing on theoretical perspectives and methodological assumptions. Current research trends are examined in the context of the history of the field.

Entry is restricted to students enrolled in SVPA and Communications Honours courses.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to demonstrate a knowledge of the contemporary literature in their field (performance, communication, design or television)
- be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills to critically examine theoretical perspectives and their underlying methodological assumptions
- be able to critically examine current debates in the field, and to relate current theoretical and research trends to historical developments in the field

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

though specific topics will depend upon the area of specialisation negotiated between the student and their supervisor: - an overview of theoretical perspectives and methodological assumptions - identification of the contemporary literature in the student's area of specialisation (performance, communication, design or television) - critical evaluation of the literature - relating current theoretical and research trends to historical developments and contemporary practice - individual reading assignments
