Abstract:

This subject examines the role of communication in organisations by focusing on communication with employees. It critically examines functionalist, interpretive and critical theories of organisational communication processes, as well as discussing philosophical approaches.

Several case studies are used to illustrate the role of communication in organisational change programs. This subject examines employee participation, customer service, employee performance and appraisal, and the role of middle management within the context of large Australian organisations and international contexts.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to provide frameworks for understanding, analysing and managing the internal communication environment of different types and structures of organisations
- be able to develop an understanding and level of expertise in the area of communication in organisations
- be able to integrate the communication strategy into corporate strategy and align senior management and professional communicator viewpoints
- be able to design, manage and evaluate a wide range of strategies in organisational communication
- be able to explain theoretical frameworks for understanding, analysing and managing the internal communication environment of organisations

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

Organisational and management theories including functionalist, scientific management, interpretative and critical approaches.
Organisational structure, communication patterns and organisational culture.
New directions in organisational communication and the future of work and organisations.
Formal and informal patterns and structures of communication.
Trends in organisational communication, including information sharing and participation, employee relations evaluation, and soft and hard measures of performance.

International contexts and issues for communicating in organisations.

Residential School
