CSU Discipline Area: Design and Visual Production (DSVIS)

Abstract:
This subject explores the relationship between the design process and the production process. Students will develop an understanding of the process of stage and production management, through the focus on the development of skills budgeting, scheduling and project management. Students will apply these skills in production roles on practical theatre projects and through project proposals.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of production roles and understand the interaction of the designer with those roles;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the complexities of managing the creative process
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the procedures and protocols of an effective production and stage management
- be able to demonstrate the ability to produce script breakdowns and prompt scripts
- be able to demonstrate the ability to design and maintain budgets;
- be able to demonstrate the ability to draw up and maintain production schedules;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the principles and processes of project management.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- the theatre production process - production roles in theatre - the role of the production manager in theatre - the role of the stage manager in theatre - managing the creative process - interpersonal communication skills - teamwork and leadership skills - budgeting and budget management - scheduling - script breakdown - the prompt script - meeting procedures - project management
