Abstract:
In this subject students will further develop the skills and knowledge necessary for dental therapists and hygienists. By the end of the subject, students will be expected to have developed an understanding of the relationship of specialist dental practice to their roles.

Enrolment restrictions:
Available only to Bachelor of Oral Health (Therapy/Hygiene) students.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
# be able to demonstrate skill in taking, processing and interpreting dental radiographs;
# demonstrate an appreciation of the Federal and Jurisdictional legislation relevant to Dentistry, including, but not limited to, patient confidentiality and rights;
# be able to demonstrate proficiency in full dental examination, documentation of oral conditions and referral where appropriate;
# be able to proficiently assess dental and medical history and the impact on dental treatment planning;
# be able to proficiently communicate with patients in relation to dental treatment and education;
# be able to proficiently communicate within the immediate team environment;
# be able to demonstrated ability to work within Infection Control and Occupational Health and Safety policies of the work place;
# be able to proficiently identify and select a range of armamentarium to perform dental treatment;
# be able proficiently identify, select and prepare materials and medicaments for dental treatments provided;
# be able to demonstrate developed skills in an extensive range of treatment procedures within the codes of practice of the oral health therapist;
# be able to demonstrate developed skills in an extensive range of hygiene and preventive procedures within the codes of practice of the oral health therapist;
# be able to demonstrate proficiency in basic local anaesthesia techniques.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
Development of basic operative dentistry skills Extension of dental hygiene skills in a clinical setting Integration of basic sciences into clinical practice Development of pain management skills Understand appropriate diagnostic skills and techniques
