Abstract:
This subject is designed to develop student understanding of, and competence in, the preparation of intra-coronal tooth preparations and their restoration using direct restorative materials (dental amalgam, composite resin, glass-ionomers). The practical aspects of the subject to be covered in the preclinical simulation clinic will comprise of the restoration of the proximal surfaces of anterior and posterior teeth, the restoration of a fractured anterior tooth and the use of complex posterior restorations. Practical aspects related to the management of dental caries will also be covered. The lecture content will support the topics covered in the practical classes and introduce students to a number of concepts of clinical significance which will be further developed in Year 3. This subject constitutes the key development of manual skills and hand-eye coordination that is required for practical dentistry.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
# be able to apply knowledge of the properties of modern dental materials to select and use appropriate materials for treatment;
# be able to demonstrate understanding of how to select and, where indicated, prescribe appropriate biomaterials for patient treatment;
# be able to demonstrate understanding of the anatomy considerations relevant to restorative dentistry
# be able to demonstrate expanded skills in the performance (within the simulated environment) of a limited range of restorative procedures (plastic materials), increasing the range of instruments used.
# be able to demonstrate developing skills in the provision of basic restorative dental care in the simulated environment.
