Abstract:
In this subject students will refine the skills and knowledge necessary for competent practice as dental therapists and hygienists. The skills developed over the preceding two years will be integrated and refined to prepare for graduate practice.

Restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Oral Health (Therapy/Hygiene) course.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
# be able to demonstrate proficiency in taking, processing and interpreting dental radiographs;
# be able to proficiently select and administer local anaesthesia
# be able to demonstrate progression in skills in performing an extensive range of treatment and preventive procedures within the codes of practice of the oral health therapy;
# be able to demonstrate an understanding of the scope of treatments available outside the codes of practice of the oral health therapist;
# be able to distinguish the role of the oral health therapist alongside the specialist in providing supporting care for prosthetics and implants;
# be able to identify the requirements of special needs clients;
# be able to demonstrate developing skill in working cooperatively with dental and allied health care professionals to meet the holistic needs of the patient.

The subject will cover the following topics:
The subject will cover clinical demonstration and assessment of all scopes of oral health therapy practise under supervision including:-
routine skills in dentistry listed under dental council legislation for oral health therapists
appropriate referral for comprehensive cases
high levels of effective communication with patients
emphasis on implementation on high levels of health promotion preventive strategies and models of behaviour change
