CSU Discipline Area: Dentistry and Oral Health (DENOH)
Duration: Two sessions
Abstract:
Students continue to expand their knowledge and skills with advanced concepts in models of behaviour change, preventive and therapeutic oral health care. Students explore advanced concepts in dental imagery interpretation, oral pathology, periodontics and restorative techniques. Time management and self evaluation as a health care professional are key skills addressed. The knowledge and competency skills acquired throughout the program are integrated within this subject content as students prepare for entry to practise. Students cannot complete this subject unless all competencies are completed which are required to register as an oral health practitioner with AHPRA.

Restricted to 3rd year students enrolled in the Bachelor of Oral Health (Therapy/Hygiene) course.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate proficiency in taking, processing and interpreting dental radiographs;
- be able to proficiently select and administer local anaesthesia
- be able to demonstrate progression in skills in performing an extensive range of treatment and preventive procedures within the codes of practice of the oral health therapy;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the scope of treatments available outside the codes of practice of the oral health therapist;
- be able to distinguish the role of the oral health therapist alongside the specialist in providing supporting care for prosthetics and implants;
- be able to identify the requirements of special needs clients;
- be able to demonstrate developing skill in working cooperatively with dental and allied health care professionals to meet the holistic needs of the patient.
- be able to apply advanced educational, preventative and therapeutic oral health care
- be able to consistently demonstrate clinical proficiency in all areas of oral health therapy/hygiene practise
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- advanced dental hygiene instrumentation.
- advanced dental therapy skills.
- appropriate and timely referral for comprehensive cases
- successful re-evaluation of patient care
- effective time managment skills
- patients with special needs
- differential diagnosis of oral pathological lesions
Workplace Learning
This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 20 days duration.
Practicum sessions in Wagga Wagga Base Hospital and CSU satelitte clinical environments under the supevision of registered clinical tutors.
Specialised Resources
Fully equipped simulated clinic and patient clinic. Registered clinicians must supervise students in these settings. Patients with high oral health needs are required for these students in the clinical setting
