Abstract:
Students will be introduced to the principles of public oral health and primary health care and will be given the opportunity to participate in the application of simple research methodologies in the community. It is expected that at the end of the subject students will be able to critically appraise research through the participation in a qualitative or qualitative analysis project in support of community goals.

Restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Oral Health (Therapy/Hygiene) course.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
# be able to describe the key issues in ethical decision making;
# be able to describe the structure and influences of the health system;
# be able to describe the contribution of other professions to health and human service delivery;
# demonstrate an awareness of social and environmental issues at both the local and wider level and their impact on oral health
# be able to describe policies, programs, methods and strategies used in public dental health over the last 50 years and their impact on today's oral health;
# be able to demonstrate an understanding of the relationships between ethics, politics and economic factors affecting the general and oral health of the community;
# be able to explain the concepts of social justice, participation, and empowerment as it relates to oral health
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
Students will build on previous knowledge assessed in DOH222 and be required to conduct a small research project, writing results following university guidelines for report writing. It is envisaged that the skills used in the reports will be at a level to be submitted for publication.
