Abstract:

In this subject students will be exposed to more complex periodontal care and to advanced restorative and endodontic procedures as part of the development of their comprehensive dental care experience. This unit will also give students an introduction to and opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills in the management of simple dental extractions incorporating diagnosis, treatment planning, execution and post operative follow up.

Enrolment restrictions:

Restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Dental science course.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

-be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge of periodontal disease and advanced skills in simulated periodontal instrumentation;
-be able to demonstrate knowledge of basic endodontics and simulated competence in a range of simple endodontic procedures;
-be able to demonstrate expanded competence relevant to the provision of simple safe local analgesia;
-be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in the management of simple tooth extractions;
-be able to demonstrate competence at an advanced level in simulated restorative/operative procedures.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

-Advanced periodontal theory
-Complex clinical periodontal care
-Preclinical endodontics
-Advanced preclinical restorative (simulation)
-Introductory exodontics
-Applied local anaesthesia
