Abstract:
This subject will deliver learning and clinical experience in gerodontics and special needs dentistry. This subject will also include research methods and continued learning and experiences in dental public health, including a community-public health based research project.

Enrolment restrictions:
Restricted to students enolled in the Bachelor of Dental Science course.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
-be able to demonstrate an understanding of research methods and their place in dentistry;
-be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the particular needs of the aged dental patient and the ability to provide competent dental care;
-be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of particular needs of the patient with “special needs” and the ability to provide competent dental care;
-be able to demonstrate knowledge of the dental public health needs of groups within the Australian population and strategies for managing and improving the oral/dental health of the community.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
-Medical evaluation and health considerations related to the gerodontic patient
-Dental evaluation and health considerations related to the gerodontic patient
-Oral conditions of significance in the elderly patient
-Treatment options for the gerodontic patient
-Customisation of care for the elderly
-Identifying the special needs patient
-Medical-dental evaluation of the special needs patient
-Treatment decision making for the special needs patient
-Customisation of care for the special needs patient
-Application of research methodologies in dental public health
-Important dental public health issues
-The role of the clinical dental team in community health
