Abstract:
The subject applies economic models and analysis to a range of contemporary economic issues. The focus is on how economists address major contemporary Australian policy issues. Topics such as labour market deregulation, macroeconomic policy issues, microeconomic reform, environmental policy issues, regional economic policy for growth, balance of payments and trade related policy are all critically assessed in terms of economic policy analysis.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to explain how classical and neoclassical economic models may be used to develop economic policy analysis across a range of contemporary issues
- be able to apply policy analysis to particular contemporary economic issues drawn from several branches of the economics discipline
- be able to evaluate case study applications of applied economic policy drawn from the extant literature
- have acquired skills through practice in namely economic report writing and critical thinking as applied to the analysis of a range of selected economic policy issues
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
The evolution of economic policy analysis through classical and neoclassical schools Labour market deregulation/discrimination Policy implications of welfare to work Unemployment and macroeconomic policy Fiscal policy and tax reform policy Environmental damage and microeconomic policy options Regional policies for employment and growth Trade policy and the balance of payments
